TCI Book Club

What can people learn about disability from books? What types of disabilities are portrayed in books? Who is writing books with disabled characters/themes? The TCI Book Club will discuss these larger societal questions through the context of books and participant’s own experiences. We will define disability broadly using the social model that says that disability is a highly contextualized and complex phenomena that occurs because of the interactions with one’s impairments. The format for this book club is that everyone will be invited to read a “disability-related book” of their choosing and share their thoughts. You can read all or part of a picture book, fiction, or nonfiction book (reading one chapter is fine!) in any format. Natalie Stagnone, TCI’s co-founder, executive director and a book enthusiast, will moderate the discussions. You can find a list of her favorite “disability-related books” on Thurston County Inclusion’s website. The goal of this book club is to engage in a larger conversation about how disability is discussed in books and form a small community of book-readers who are interested in disability.

Thurston County Inclusion has a small library of books to give out to participants, but many of our suggested books are also available in the Timberland Regional Library Catalog.
